Latvia – Measures taken to minimize the spread of the novel coronavirus

2020-03-19

The designated operator of Latvia, Latvijas Pasts, would like to inform other Union member countries and their designated operators that, owing to the outbreak and rapid spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the ensuing emergency situation declared by the Government of Latvia, the processing of all inbound and outbound international mail conveyed via passenger air transport has been suspended with effect from 17 March 2020 until further notice.

Latvijas Pasts is therefore declaring a situation of force majeure and will strive to find alternative means to convey its outbound mail by truck or cargo air transport. However, there may be significant delays in the meantime. For preventive purposes, shipments are stored in a warehouse for 72 hours prior to transport.

For any alternative line-haul delivery solutions, such as cargo air or ground transport, please contact Latvijas Pasts in advance by e-mail at cargo@pasts.lv.

With effect from 16 March 2020, Latvijas Pasts has extended the period during which postal items will be stored at post offices from 30 to 60 days. Storage for up to 60 days will be free of charge. This is intended to alleviate customers’ concerns about having to collect items from post offices immediately, and also to help to reduce the flow of customers at post offices.

Latvijas Pasts would like to thank all Union member countries and their designated operators for their understanding. It will update all Union member countries and their designated operators via EmIS once the situation has returned to normal.
